Gomez Powers Lady Lions To Split At Northwestern State

Southeastern launches five homers in opening game

Southeastern gets ready to greet Katie Duhe after her fifth-inning home run
NATCHITOCHES – Freshman Meghan Gomez powered a 12-hit attack for Southeastern Louisiana with a pair of home runs and five RBI as the Lady Lions posted a 15-2 win over Northwestern State in the opening game of a Southland Conference twinbill Saturday at Demon Diamond.

In the nightcap, Northwestern State's Kelee Grimes tossed a two-hitter and the Demons collected 11 hits en route to a 9-1 win. Southeastern (12-19, 2-12 SLC) and Northwestern State (4-26, 2-14 SLC) conclude their three-game series on Sunday at noon. Live stats will be available at www.LionSports.net or www.NSUDemons.com.

GAME 1 – Southeastern 15, Northwestern State 2 (5 inn.)
Gomez went 3-for-3 in the opening game and gave the Lady Lions all the runs it would need when her two-run homer to left field in the first inning gave Southeastern a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Lions added three more runs in the second inning off NSU starter Sara Dornelas (0-6) as Amber Freeman led off the inning with her first Division I home run before Gomez followed four batters later with a two-out blast over the center-field fence.

Katie Duhe and Chelsea Takacs each belted home runs in a five-run fifth for the Lady Lions while Heather Sherrill went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, passing former Lady Lion and current assistant coach Karin Smith Gadberry with 67 in her career.

Sherrill, a senior from Alexandria, drove in two runs and moved to within seven hits of tying Heather Dye's school-record of 186. Tamra Ladnier and Duhe had two hits each for Southeastern, which scored its most runs ever in a Southland Conference game and most overall since a 17-8 win over St. Louis in 2007.

Catherine Gunther (5-8) scattered four hits in earning the complete-game victory for Southeastern.

GAME 2 – Northwestern State 9, Southeastern 1
Grimes (3-15) walked two batters and held Southeastern without a hit until Duhe hit a two-out single up the middle in the fourth. Allyson McCubbins added a single for the Lady Lions, who stranded four runners on base and committed two errors.

Northwestern State scored twice in the second inning off Katelyn Thomason (3-5) as Tiffany Ward and Leslie Johnson hit solo home runs to left field. The Lady Demons added two runs in the third, fourth in the fourth and finished off the game with a run in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk.

Stormi Stech went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead Northwestern State while Cary Bruno and Johnson had two hits each. Samantha Roberts went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Lady Demons.

Thomason fanned three batters and allowed three hits in 1.2 innings for Southeastern.
