THIBODAUX – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Nicholls State in the final game of its Southland Conference series Wednesday afternoon at the Colonel Softball Complex.

For the second straight day, the Lady Lions (5-5, 0-3) were thwarted by the efforts of Nicholls State pitcher Lacey Gros (7-2). Gros held Southeastern to four hits and struck out 12 batters in a complete-game effort, allowing the Colonels (13-5, 3-0 SLC) complete the series sweep.

Neither team could get anything going offensively until NSU took control in the bottom of the fourth inning off Southeastern junior Jenna Yoder (2-2). Danielle Clayton started off the rally with a one-out triple. Lyndsay Mesh followed with a sharp single to score Clayton and break the scoreless tie.

Kayla Watterson followed with a double to score Mesh. An RBI single by Haley Burkett and a sacrifice fly by Whitney Roan put the Colonels up, 4-0.

Southeastern threatened in the top of the sixth inning. Singles by senior Heather Sherrill and freshman Lauren Coniglio, along with a walk to senior Allyson McCubbins loaded the bases with one out. However, Gros retired sophomore Tamra Ladnier and freshman Katelyn Thomason to end the threat.

Southeastern broke through for the first run of the day in the final inning. With one out, freshman Meghan Gomez powered her second home run of the season over the left field fence to avoid the shutout. Gros sat down sophomore Katie Duhe and Sherrill to end Southeastern's comeback hopes.

Southeastern will be back in action on Friday, competing in the Troy Trojan Classic. The Lady Lions will face Appalachian State at 2 p.m. and host Troy at 4 p.m.
