THIBODAUX – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Nicholls State to open Southland Conference play Tuesday evening at the Colonel Softball Complex.
In the opener, Nicholls State pitcher Lacey Gros (6-2) held Southeastern (5-4, 0-2 SLC) to one hit in a 3-0 victory. Nicholls State (12-5, 2-0 SLC) exploded for six runs in the first inning on the way to a 10-2, five-inning win in the nightcap.
The series concludes with a 3 p.m. single game on Wednesday.
Game One – Nicholls State 3, Southeastern Louisiana 0
NSU jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Southeastern starter
Catherine Gunther (1-2). Megan Gaspard led off the inning with a single and would later score on an RBI groundout by Audrey Wood.
Southeastern would get its first and only hit of the contest in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman
Jordan Logan led off the inning with an infield single. Gros recovered to retire the next three batters to end the Lady Lion threat.
Nicholls State padded its lead in the bottom of the fourth. Danielle Clayton led off the inning with a single and would later give NSU a 2-0 cushion, scoring on a passed ball.
Nicholls State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kayla Watterson led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI double by Marci Millet to put NSU up, 3-0.
Gros, who finished with 10 strikeouts, retired Southeastern in order in the seventh to clinch the complete-game victory.
Game Two – Nicholls State 10, Southeastern Louisiana 2 (5 innings)
Southeastern threatened in the top of the first off Wood (6-3). Consecutive two-out singles by sophomore
Katie Duhe and senior
Heather Sherrill put runners at the corners. However, Wood recovered to strike out senior Allyson McCubbins to end the threat.
Nicholls State jumped all over Lady Lion freshman
Katelyn Thomason (2-1) in the bottom of the first inning. Gaspard led off the inning with a single and Kodi Butler followed with an RBI double to plate Gaspard. Wood followed with an RBI single to score Butler.
The next three Colonels also reached, with Karla Troxler drawing a bases loaded walk to force in the inning's third run. Thomason recovered to retire the next two batters, but Whitney Roan cleared the bases with a three-run double, putting NSU up, 6-0.
Southeastern answered with two runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman
Lauren Coniglio led off the frame with an infield single. One out later, sophomore
Tamra Ladnier powered a home run over the left centerfield fence to pull the Lady Lions within four at 6-2. The homer was the first of the Hernando, Miss. native's career.
Nicholls would add two more runs in the bottom of the third. Gaspard singled home the first run and Butler doubled home the second to put the Colonels ahead, 8-2.
The Colonels took advantage of two Southeastern errors in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two unearned runs and clinching a 10-2 win.
