Lady Lions Close Road Trip With Loss at Texas State

Southeastern falls to 6-14 overall and 2-7 in Southland play

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Arianne Cruckshank posted her second double-double in as many matches, but a hot-hitting Texas State team was too much for the Lady Lions to overcome in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 loss to the Bobcats in Southland Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.

The loss was the seventh in a row for the Lady Lions (6-14, 2-7 SLC). Texas State improved to 12-12 overall and 6-3 in Southland play, hitting .252, while holding Southeastern to a .122 hitting percentage.

Southeastern senior Julie Elliott led the Lady Lions with eight kills, while junior Allison Jones and freshman Courtney Donald notched seven winners each. Junior Alex Greer led the team with 12 digs, while Donald, freshman Alexis Braghini and senior Jessica Srajer finished with two block assists each.

AJ Watlington paced Texas State with a match-high 10 kills. Jessica Weynand and Amber Calhoun added eight kills, while Brittany Collins led the team with 15 assists. Lydia Werchan led the way with 16 digs and Melinda Cave added 11 digs.

The first set was the match's most competitive, featuring 13 ties and five lead changes. Southeastern tied the score for the final time at 18 on a kill by Elliott. However, Texas State closed the set on a 7-2 run, taking a 1-0 lead after a Donald attack error ended the set.

Texas State held Southeastern to a .058 hitting percentage in the second set and went into the break with a 2-0 lead behind four kills in the set by Watlington. Elliott was dominant in the third set, finishing with six kills and hitting .857 in the set, but Texas State never trailed and hit .286 in the set to close out the match.

Southeastern will return home on Friday, hosting Southland Conference leader Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. in the University Center. The match is the first of five straight home matches for the Lady Lions. Admission is free to all Southeastern home volleyball matches.
