HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team will look to move back to .500 in Southland Conference play when it travels to face league rival Sam Houston State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum.
The Lady Lions (6-10, 2-3 SLC) will be looking to snap a three-match losing streak. Sam Houston State (13-10, 5-1 SLC) currently sits atop the Southland West Division standings and is currently on a league-best five-match win streak. Southeastern will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's hard-fought 31-29, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20 defeat at the hands of Stephen F. Austin. Senior
Jessica Srajer led Southeastern with 13 kills in Saturday's loss, while sophomore
Arianne Cruckshank was credited with 47 assists. Junior
Alex Greer recorded a match-high 26 digs, while Cruckshank and senior
Lauren Mayer added 20 and 19 digs, respectively.
Srajer leads the team with 2.20 kills per set, followed by junior
Allison Jones (2.06), freshman
Kaprice Glover (2.00), freshman
Taylor Buckner (1.98) and Mayer (1.85). Cruckshank leads the team and ranks eighth in the Southland Conference with 7.91 assists per set, while senior
Katie Collins has also seen ample playing time at setter, averaging 4.71 assists per set.
In Southland Conference play, Southeastern freshman
Courtney Donald ranks fifth in the league with a .337 hitting percentage. Cruckshank is averaging 9.67 assists per set against league opposition – good for sixth in the Southland.
Defensively, Greer paces the squad and ranks fifth in the Southland Conference with 3.80 digs per set, followed by Mayer (2.74), Cruckshank (2.37) and Buckner (2.09). Freshman
Alexis Braghini is tops on the team with 30 blocks, along with senior
Julie Elliott (28), Srajer (23) and Donald (21).
In Southland Conference matches, Elliott is fourth in the league with 1.25 blocks per set. The dig per set averages versus league competition of Greer (4.42, 4th) and Mayer (3.55, 8th) both rank among the Southland top 10 in that category.
Sam Houston State features two of the top attackers in the league in Carli Kolbe (3.83 kills per set) and Anna Ferguson (3.28), as Kolbe and Ferguson rank third and sixth in the Southland, respectively. Michelle Miller is third in the league with 9.50 assists per game for the Bearkats.
Defensively, Kaylee Hawkins tops SHSU with 3.54 digs per set. Ferguson comes into Wednesday's match with a team-high 78 blocks.
Last season, Southeastern earned a five-set victory over Sam Houston State in the University Center. Mayer had 11 kills to pace the Lady Lions' 18-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-10 win.
Following Wednesday's match, Southeastern will return home for Homecoming Weekend, hosting Lamar at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the University Center.
