HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Corey Allmond scored 18 of his season-high 25 points in the second half and Sam Houston State hit key free throws down the stretch to hold on and defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 73-62, in a Southland Conference game Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.

Drae Murray scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half and fueled a 10-1 first half run with a pair of 3-pointers as SHSU (7-8, 1-1 SLC) built a 13-point first half lead and snapped a two-game losing streak. Southeastern (7-9, 1-2 SLC), which hosts McNeese State on Wednesday at 7 p.m., dropped its ninth game on the road in 10 tries.

Southeastern trailed 39-29 on a layup by Allmond with 18:28 remaining before going on a 14-5 run to close to within 44-43. Chris Cyprian, who led Southeastern with 12 points, started the run with a pair of 3-pointers before David Ndoumba scored seven straight points, the last on a three-point play that cut the lead to 44-42.

Warrell Span then made one of two free throws to close the gap to 44-43, but the Lions would not get any closer as SHSU answered each Southeastern challenge.

After Patrick Sullivan missed a layup that would have cut into a 59-54 lead, Allmond converted a 3-pointer with 5:10 left to put the Bearkats ahead, 62-54, and added another 3-pointer to for a 65-56 lead with 3:10 left.

Sullivan grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Southeastern, which shot 46 percent from the floor, but was 5-for-20 from behind the 3-point line. Ashton Mitchell added 13 points and 10 assists for SHSU, which shot 43 percent from the floor and made 8 of 18 3-pointers in the contest.
