Lady Lions Wrap Up Road Slate at Southern

Southeastern volleyball prepares for final road trip

HAMMOND - Looking to snap a four-match losing skid, the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (9-16, 3-11 Southland Conference) will conclude the road portion of its 2008 schedule and conclude a six-match road trip, the longest of the season, when the Lady Lions visit the Southern Jaguars at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Baton Rouge.

The Lady Lions, who currently sit two matches out of the eighth and final SLC Tournament spot, are hoping a strong performance against the Jaguars can help build momentum heading into their final conference matches on Thursday and Saturday. However, Southeastern is not looking past the Jaguars.

"We are looking to try to compete aggressively throughout the entire match," head coach Julie Langford said. "We want to play tough in every facet of the game: serving, passing, setting, hitting and blocking. It's important for us to stay focused and control the tempo of the match. That's what we did well against them last time."

The Lady Lions swept the Jaguars in straight sets when the teams got together on Oct. 7. A victory in Tuesday's make up contest for a Sept. 9 match that was cancelled in the wake of Hurricane Gustav, would give Southeastern a 2-0 season sweep against Southern and help Southeastern prepare for the final weekend of the regular season.

The Lady Lions will return to Hammond for the final two matches of the regular season, and try to stay in the hunt for their first conference tournament berth since 2002 when they host perennial SLC East Division power Stephen F. Austin on Thursday at 7 p.m. Southeastern will then host McNeese State on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day in the regular season finale for both teams.
