Pitched seven-plus innings and scattered three hits in earning the season-opening win over defending Sun Belt Conference Tournament champion Florida International on Friday … combined with Stefan Lopez on a four-hitter and helped snap Garrett Wittels’ 56-game hitting streak (two shy of the NCAA Division I record set by Robin Ventura in 1987) … was aided by a defense that turned inning-ending double plays in the first and second … retired seven straight batters after a fifth-inning single by Yoandy Barroso before issuing a walk and hit batter to lead off the eighth.
