Lucias MacKay

Lucais MacKay

Former NCAA Division I Hammer Throw Champion Lucais MacKay begins his second season as an assistant coach on the Lion coaching staff. He will assist with the Southeastern throwers.

A native of Hughson, Calif., MacKay won the 2003 NCAA hammer throw at Georgia. He is a six-time Division I All-American, an eight-time All-Southeastern Conference athlete and a two-time SEC champion. MacKay spent the past two years training for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

An assistant track and field coach at California Lutheran University from 2008-10, MacKay tutored the Division III National Champion and record holder in the men’s hammer throw as well as the Division III runner-up in the women’s hammer. 

During his tenure at Cal Lutheran he worked with three Division III All-Americans, eight national qualifiers, 11 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference throwing champions and 29 individual All-SCIAC throwers.MacKay  was awarded the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

MacKay also served as a throwing coach at Lawrenceville Preparatory Academy in Princeton, N.J. (2006-07) and Adolfo Camarillo High School in Camarillo, Calif. (2001-02).

He holds a Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University, Irvine (2012), a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the University of Georgia (2005) and an Associate Degree from Moorpark College, Calif. (2003).

The son of a track and field coach, he graduated Hughson High (Calif.) as the top-ranked discus thrower in the United States. MacKay originally attended the University of Southern California on a football scholarship, redshirting as an offensive lineman.

In just one year at Southeastern, MacKay has coached 10 Indoor Track & Field athletes to All-Southland performances and helped capture 2 SLC Individual Titles in 2013 season.

Under his guidance, the Southeastern throwers scored over 50% of the total team points at the SLC Outdoor Championships. He qualified 6 student athletes to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round in their respective events, and 1 one for the USATF Junior National Championships.Â
