Jim Waldrop was an All-Conference guard for the Lion basketball team in 1941. As a member of the football team, he scored a then-school single game record three touchdowns in a win over Murray State in 1940. Waldrop later played minor league baseball, was a successful prep football coach at Morgan City and completed his coaching career as head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Southeastern.
He took over as head baseball coach for the 1967 season, lasting through the 1972 season. Waldrop, who coached at LSU for two springs, is a veteran of professional baseball, playing 10 seasons of minor league ball. Two of these years were spent in the Southern Association. The former Morgan City coach also spent five years in the Evangeline League, playing with Natchez, Hammond, Lafayette, and Houma.
Waldrop had perennial contenders at Morgan City High School, and his 1955 squad advanced to the Class AA finals.
