NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's and women's track & field teams continued competition at the Southland Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Homer Bryce Stadium Friday.
The second day of the conference championships continued with trials for track events, in addition to finals for the men's long jump, women's shot put, triple jump, and javelin. Saturday's field events concluded with the men's and women's shot put. As a team, the Southeastern women enter day three ranked 11
th in the SLC. The SLU men are sixth among 10 teams prior to the final day of the championships.
Josh-Ty Brown claimed the first gold medal of the meet for the Lions. The sophomore won the shot put with a career-best 18.01-meter throw (59'1"). Brown's throw is the best by any SLC student-athlete this season and the only performance in the conference to surpass the 18-meter mark. Currently, Brown's 18.01-meter throw is the 35
th-best toss in the NCAA East Region.
In the 400-meter dash trials,
Daniel Atinaya qualified for the finals. The sophomore completed the race in 46.91 seconds to finish fourth. Atinaya's 46.91 time is a personal-best mark, surpassing his previous best of 47.32 from the LSU Opener on Mar. 21. Atinaya will compete in the finals at 6:10 p.m. Saturday.
After qualifying for the finals of the 200-meter dash Thursday,
Onyah Favour claimed a spot in the 400-meter dash finals Friday. Favour clocked a 53.01 time to finish first in the trial. The junior's season-best 52.01 time from the East Coast Relays remains the second-best mark in the SLC this season. She will compete in the 400-meter dash at 6 p.m. and the 200-meter event at 7:20 p.m. Saturday.
SLU will wrap up the Southland Outdoor Championships Saturday. The women's discus throw begins the final day of events at 11 a.m. The three-day meet is set to end with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 8:40 p.m. At 5 p.m. Saturday, the meet will be televised on ESPN+.
