HAMMOND, La. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team will look to extend the longest winning streak in program history and remain unbeaten in league play when it travels to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three-game conference series this week.
SLU (27-9, 9-0 SLC) carries a 13-game winning streak into the three-game set at the Islanders (10-22, 4-5 SLC). The series opens with a 4 p.m. contest Friday and continues with a noon doubleheader Saturday. All three games will be televised on ESPN+.
The Lions set the new school standard for consecutive victories with a 3-0 nonconference win at ULM Tuesday.
Shelby Morris and
Maria Detillier led SLU with two hits apiece, while
Cera Blanchard,
Macie LaRue,
Haley Crawford and
Hallie Burns combined to hold the Warhawks to four hits in the shutout.
Southeastern leads the SLC with a .338 team batting average, as eight starters are hitting .300 or above. Morris leads the team with a .418 batting average, 51 hits and 35 runs scored, while
Cydnee Schneider (.378),
Colleen Kulivan (.378),
Chloe Magee (.350) and
Kailey Dixon (.323) are the other top hitters for average. Magee paces the roster with 19 walks and 15 steals.
Detillier leads the team with seven home runs and 30 RBI, while
Brilee Ford follows with five homers and 24 RBI. SLU tops the nation with 17 triples, as Morris is 13
th nationally with a team-high four triples. Schneider is currently sixth in Division I with a Southland-high 13 doubles.
Blanchard (10-1, 1.19 ERA, 1 save), Burns (9-3, 1.96 ERA, 1 save), Crawford (2-1, 1.15 ERA, 2 saves) and LaRue (3-2, 2.55 ERA, 1 save) are the primary arms for a Lion pitching staff that ranks among the nation's best with a 1.87 ERA (5
th) and 12 shutouts (2
nd).
Southeastern will be facing an Islander team that has won its last two Southland series. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is hitting .229 with Skylar Heger leading the team with a .301 batting average, two home runs and 18 RBI. Reigning SLC Pitcher of the Week Kendra Winfrey (7-7, 7.34 ERA) leads an Islander pitching staff that has a 7.92 team ERA.
Following this week's action, SLU will continue its road swing with a three-game series at reigning four-time SLC regular season champion McNeese next Thursday and Friday in Lake Charles. The series opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Thursday and concludes with a 1 p.m. contest Friday. All three games in Lake Charles will be televised on ESPN+.
