NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University beach volleyball team ended the final day of the Tulane Bayou Beach Duals with a 2-1 split decision Saturday afternoon at the White Sands Beach Volleyball Facility.
Southeastern (5-9, 2-1 SLC) opened serve Saturday morning, claiming a dominant 4-1 victory over Central Arkansas (4-9) to start the day on a good note. The Lady Lions gained momentum early in the match as Makayla Hicks and Cadie Kusy secured a tough 24-22, 21-19 victory over the Sugar Bears on Court 4. Central Arkansas rallied back to earn a 21-18, 21-19 win on Court 2, but SLU battled to obtain wins on the remaining courts to seal the deal.
The Lady Lions returned to the sand later in the afternoon, suffering a 4-1 loss against tournament host Tulane (11-7). The Green Wave gained an early advantage, but SLU battled to force the match into three-sets on Courts 1 and 4. Hicks and Kusy fought to claim a 23-21, 9-21, 15-10 win and helped Southeastern to avoid the shutout. The duo has proven to be a solid pair for the green and gold, closing out the weekend 4-1.
SLU ended the day with a commanding 4-1 victory over conference rival Nicholls (6-6, 0-2 SLC) to record its second Southland conference win of the season. The Colonels gained a win on Court 2 to evade the shutout, but dominated to secure two-set wins on three courts. Gabriella Hrubanova and Mia Sauers claimed a big 21-9, 21-11 victory on Court 1 while Mia McKinney and Maggie Paiva also tallied a notable 21-16, 21-12 win on Court 3.
The Lady Lions will move forward to host their first home match of the season against Spring Hill Tuesday, March 17 at 1 p.m. Tuesday's match versus the Badgers will take place at the Southeastern Beach Volleyball Complex.
