SLU throws coach Kibwé Johnson & Gr. thrower Terrell Webb celebrate Webb's gold medal in weight throw at the 2025 SLC Indoor Championships

First Year SLU Assistant has Helped Lion Throwers Thrive as He Earns National Role

INDIANAPOLIS – Southeastern Louisiana University track & field throws coach Kibwé Johnson has been selected to lead the nation's best athletes as USA Track & Field named him the Men's Senior Team Head Coach and Throws Coach for the 2025 season which includes the World Championships, World Relays, and Continental Championships.

Johnson remains as a member of the Southeastern staff while filling this role with USA Track & Field.

"This is a major recognition of Coach Johnson's work and we are so proud of this opportunity for him," said SLU head track & field coach Michael Rheams. "He's helped our throwers reach new highs since joining us and we are excited to see what he does with this country's top athletes as they go for international glory."

Under Johnson's guidance, Terrell Webb stepped up from being one of the Southland Conference's best throwers to one of the best in the nation, qualifying for the 2025 NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships in the weight throw, as well as one of the best in SLU program history.

Other Lion throwers have also made big strides in their performance with Johnson on the staff. Heading into the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, Donroy Brown is second on the SLC performance list in the shot put while Gerrit Visser sits third in the conference in the hammer throw.

"This experience with USA Track & Field will only help give Coach Johnson even more knowledge which we believe will continue to help our athletes here in Hammond hit higher and higher marks in the future," added Rheams.

Johnson is a two-time Olympian, a four-time World Championships competitor, and is fourth all-time on the U.S. performance list in the hammer throw. He is in his first season as the SLU throws coach.

The World Athletics Championships run Sept. 13-21 in Tokyo while the World Athletic Relays run May 10-11 in Guangzhou, China. The North American, Central American, and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships will run June 28-30 at a location to be announced.

Southeastern's track & field team will compete in the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 15-17 at the Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field on the campus of Rice University in Houston.
