Box Score HAMMOND, La. – McNeese used a four-run sixth inning to rally past the reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team for a 6-5 in the rubber game of its SLC series Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.
SLU (32-10, 12-3 SLC) dropped its first conference series of the season. The visiting Cowgirls improved to 25-17 overall and 11-4 in SLC play.
Maria Detillier,
Maddie Watson and
Shenita Tucker each drove in runs for Southeastern.
Macie LaRue (13-1) suffered her first loss in the circle, allowing eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Southeastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Chloe Magee came home for the inning's first run, as Detillier evaded a tag on a run down. Later in the frame, Watson singled home Detillier to give SLU a two-run cushion.
McNeese loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second, but LaRue limited the Cowgirls to just one run and maintained a 2-1 lead.
Southeastern added to its lead in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of two McNeese errors to extend its lead to 3-1. An RBI single by Tucker pushed the SLU advantage after four innings of play.
After back-to-back infield singles by Kassidy Chance and Nyjah Fontenot to open the McNeese sixth, Jada Munoz cleared the bases with a two-run double. Samantha Mundine then tied it with an RBI single to center. One out later, Reese Reyna singled home the go-ahead run and put the Cowgirls up, 5-4.
Southeastern would get no closer. McNeese reliever Maddie Taylor (11-6) came in after Tucker's RBI single in the fourth and retired all 10 SLU batters she faced to close out the win.
The Lady Lions will be back in action for its one midweek SLC series of the season. SLU will head to Lamar for a three-game set that opens with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday and closes with a 2 p.m. contest Wednesday. All three games in Beaumont, Texas will be televised on ESPN+.
