SLU Takes Part in LSU Alumni Gold in Last Ramp-Up Ahead of SLC Outdoor Championships

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team will head back to the Louisiana State Capitol city for its final meet prior to the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday, taking part in the LSU Alumni Gold meet at LSU's Bernie Moore Track Complex.

Saturday's schedule at the LSU Alumni Gold starts at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw competition kicking off the field events. Racing on the track starts at 12:30 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relays. Live results will be available through Delta Timing and the host institution.

With this being the final meet prior to the SLC Outdoor Championships, several Lions are looking to cement spots at the top of the conference performance list as medal favorites while also trying to lock down invites to the NCAA Outdoor National Championship East First Round.

Three Southeastern athletes currently lead the Southland in their discipline. Victory Achakpoekri currently holds the SLC's best 400-meter time, the 46.75-second run he did at the Strawberry Relays two weeks ago. Olu Ogunyemi has the Southland's best time in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.08 seconds at the Lurline Hamilton Invitational. He's trying to get in position for two medals, currently holding the fifth-fastest time in the SLC in the 400-meter hurdles as well when he ran a 52.54-second time at the Pelican Relays. Esther Nwanze has the best time in the 400-meter hurdles in the Southland this season with her best mark being the 58.52-second run she completed at the Pelican Relays.

Ogunyemi's time currently has him right on the fringe of earning an invite to the NCAA East First Round in the 110-meter hurdles while Nwanze's time in the 400-meter hurdles has her easily within the cutoff mark to earn an invite at this time.

Other SLU athletes currently in podium positions on the Southland performance list include Onyah Favour in the 400-meter dash. Her time of 53.56 seconds from the Pelican Relays is currently the second-fastest in the SLC and has her on the bubble of qualifying for the NCAA East First Round for the event. Donroy Brown currently has the third-best shot put mark in the Southland this year, a throw of 16.98 meters (55'8.5") which he unleashed at the Strawberry Relays. The Lady Lion 4x400-meter relay team of Nwanze, Favour, Aneace Scott, and Miriam Kauer currently has the SLC's second-fastest time after breaking the Southeastern school record at the Strawberry Relays with a time of 3:42.07.

Several other Lions are looking to improve their marks and get into podium positions heading into the SLC Outdoor Championships. Gerrit Visser currently has the conference's fourth-longest hammer throw of the season, a mark of 55.20 meters (181'8") which he achieved at the Pelican Relays. Both Alden Dupree and Donald Butler hold the fourth-highest mark cleared in the high jump as both cleared 2.05 meters (6'8.75") at the Strawberry Relays. Marvellous Asemota has the conference's fifth-fastest time in the 200-meter dash with her top time being 23.96 seconds, which she ran at the Strawberry Relays.

Following the LSU Alumni Gold meet, the Lions gear up for the 2025 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which runs May 15-17 at the Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas.
