NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University beach volleyball team closed day one of the Southland Beach Volleyball Championship Tournament with a split decision against San Jose State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday afternoon at Privateer Beach.
No. 6 Southeastern (13-19, 3-5 SLC) took care of business to advance in the tournament with a 3-2 victory over No. 3 San Jose State (12-19, 6-2 SLC) in its opening match. The Lady Lions upset the Spartans after securing early momentum in the match. Makayla Hick and Mia Sauers extended their three match winning streak against San Jose State with a 21-16, 21-19 victory on court three. Ysabella Lockwood and Kennedi Steele battled on court four to claim a 21-19, 14-21, 15-11 win while Aspen Steele and Anne Brauckmiller sealed the deal on court five with a two set victory.
SLU returned to the sand, suffering a 3-0 sweep against No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (21-12, 7-1 SLC). The Islanders held all the momentum throughout the match after undergoing a short weather delay. Southeastern worked to gain a spark to close out the day, but could not counter attack against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to avoid the shutout.
The Lady Lions will return for day two of the SLC Beach Volleyball Championship Tournament Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. in an elimination match against the winner of No. 4 Stephen F. Austin and No. 8 New Orleans. All matches will be played at Privateer Beach.
