With just two meets remaining before the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, the Lions are looking to defend or get into podium positions while trying to earn spots in the NCAA First Round as the team heads towards the conference championships.
Olu Ogunyemi and
Esther Nwanze already hold the top spots in the conference in the hurdles. Ogunyemi leads the SLC in the 110-meter hurdles, looking to improve on his time of 14.08 seconds while climbing further up the performance list in the 400-meter hurdles where he sits in fifth-place in the conference with a time of 52.54 seconds this season. Nwanze holds the top time in the women's 400-meter hurdles in the SLC, having stopped the clock in 58.52 seconds. The reigning SLC Women's Track Athlete of the Week has eyes on higher prizes, looking to reset her own school record in the discipline which she set at last year's SLC Outdoor Championships when she ran a time of 57.52 seconds.
Onyah Favour currently holds the second-fastest time in the SLC in the 400-meter dash. Her time of 53.56 seconds at last weekend's Pelican Relays has her eyeing another conference championship in a few weeks.
Miriam Kauer is not far behind her, having clocked a 54.78 second run at the Lurline Hamilton Invitational, the fifth-fastest time in the SLC.
Gerrit Visser has his sights on a podium in the hammer throw after his throw of 55.20 meters (181'1") at the Pelican Relays gave him the third-farthest throw in the SLC so far this season.
Kauer will be looking to position herself for two solo medals at the conference championships. While being fifth in the 400-meter dash currently, she's also fourth in the 200-meter dash in the conference with her best time being 24.23 seconds. Favour is not far behind her in the 200-meter time, sitting at 24.37 seconds in the discipline and seventh in the SLC performance list.
Victory Achakpoekri and
Javon-Taye Williams are both in the hunt in the 400-meter dash on the men's side. Achakpoekri is fifth in the SLC performance list with a time of 47.27 seconds this year while Williams ran a 47.38 and sits right behind him in sixth.
In the high jump, both
Alden Dupree and
Donald Butler have cleared 2.02 meters (6'7.5") this year for the fifth-highest height cleared in the Southland in 2025.
Trey Faherty successfully crossed over 4.40 meters (14'5.25") in the pole vault, giving him the seventh-highest height cleared this year.
The Lions have two trying to get into podium positions in both shot put and discus throw on the men's side with
Josh-Ty Brown in the mix for both. Brown's best shot put is 16.66 meters (54'8") which is currently fifth while
Porter Gibson sits in seventh with a throw of 16.11 meters (52'10.25"). Brown's best throw in the discus throw is 48.85 meters (160'3"), putting him sixth in the Southland. Just ahead of him is
