Webb Breaks Meet Weight Throw Record, Asemota Takes School 200-Meter Dash Record

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field teams got record breaking performances by both Terrell Webb in the weight throw and Marvellous Asemota in the 200-meter dash on the first day of the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

On his way to his second-straight Southland Conference Weight Throw Championship, Terrell Webb took a record that had been held nearly a decade by Southeastern Hall of Famer Alex Young. Webb's first throw of the day went 21.42 meters (70'3.5"), immediately vaulting him into first place and earned him a spot in the Finals, giving him a second set of three throws.

It was his fifth throw of the day where Webb etched his name in the SLC history books as that toss traveled 23.62 meters (77'6"), besting the previous SLC Championships record of 21.93 meters set by SLU's lone indoor track & field national champion on Feb. 16, 2016, the same year Young went on to win that NCAA national championship in the weight throw. The throw also moved Webb into seventh-place on the NCAA Division I performance list as he tries to earn an automatic invite to the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. With no other competitor even crossing 20 meters, Webb cruised to the gold medal and 10 points for the Lions in the team competition.

The Lions also got points from Alden Dupree and the distance medley relay team. Dupree finished in seventh-place in the high jump and got SLU's men two points. He cleared 2.01 meters (6'7") to earn his finishing spot. The Southeastern DMR team of Josh Anding, Javon-Taye Williams, Euan Lagan, and Landen Schillage finished the 4,000-meter run in 10:19.59, earning Southeastern an eighth-place finish and a point in the team competition.

On the women's side, Asemota's historic moment came in the 200-meter dash preliminary heats. She took to the start line in the third heat and crossed the line in 24.49 seconds, winning her heat and fitting her well within the top-eight to qualify her for Monday's 200m Final. That time also bested the SLU women's indoor record on a curved track of 24.33 seconds, set by Kendesha Ingraham at the SLC Indoor Championships on Feb. 22, 2018.

Onyah Favour will join Asemota in Monday's 200-meter Final as she stopped the clock with a personal best time of 24.52 seconds in her preliminary heat, earning her a top-eight time as well.

Asemota and Favour will both be in another Final as well on Monday. Asemota will compete in the Final of the 60-meter sprint after she won the fourth preliminary heat with a time of 7.63 seconds to automatically qualify. Favour will be in the Final of the 400-meter dash after getting the second-fastest time of the prelims, stopping the clock in 54.79 seconds.

Joining Favour in the 400-meter dash Final will be Esther Nwanze, who had the sixth-fastest time in the prelims to make the cut by crossing the line in a personal best time of 55.36 seconds.

Two men's runners also qualified for Finals on Monday. Olu Ogunyemi won his heat and had the fastest time of the prelims in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.05 seconds. Winning his heat automatically qualified him for the Final. Before taking part in the DMR, Williams earned a spot in the 400-meter dash Final with the third-fastest time of the prelims, 47.84 seconds, which was also his best time this season in the distance.

After the first day of the action, where medals were handed out in six of the 17 competitions in both the men's and women's championships, the Lions had 13 points and sat in eighth-place in the team standings while the Lady Lions were yet to score.

The final day of the 2025 SLC Indoor Track & Field Championships starts at 9 a.m. on Monday with the continuation of the men's heptathlon, kicking off with the 60-meter hurdles. The women's 60-meter hurdles Finals starts the individual track action at 11 a.m. while the men's heptathlon pole vault starts the field events at 9:35 a.m. and the individual field events kick off the at 10 a.m. with the women's shot put.
