EDINBURG, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to UTRGV in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Southeastern (7-2, 0-1 SLC) saw its six-match win streak snapped in Saturday's loss. The Vaqueros evened their overall record at 3-3 and improved to 1-0 in league action.
 
Southeastern picked up a win on the No. 1 doubles court, as Bente Bierma and Panatchakorn Suanarsa (7-2) handled Maria Bakhtina and Rhea Makesar, 6-0. However, the Vaqueros picked up wins on the No. 2 and 3 courts to take a 1-0 lead.
 
"Doubles was very close and we looked great," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "Once we didn't get the doubles point, we fell off a bit and UTRGV made us pay for that."
 
SLU evened the match at 1-1 when Taisia Bolsova (6-3) took down Valentina Umaco, 6-1, 6-1 on court 6. However, UTRGV answered with straight-set wins on courts 1,3,4 and 5 to clinch the match.
 
Bierma pushed Makesar to a super tie-breaker on No. 2, but ultimately dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 10-8 decision to provide the final 6-1 margin.
 
"We had a great win at No. 1 doubles and Taisia was fantastic in singles," Hayes commented. "We have some adjustments to make and we'll improve."
 
SLU's scheduled match at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for Monday has been moved up to Sunday at 3 p.m. due to expected high winds in the area Monday.
