So. sprinter Marvellous Asemota celebrates after winning the 60-meter sprint in school record-breaking time at the Vulcan Invitational

Ogunyemi, Asemota Break School Records, Webb Breaks Meet Record on Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field teams broke two school records and one meet record during Friday's Vulcan Invitational, hosted by the University of Alabama-Birmingham, at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Southeastern's three record breaking performances came from Terrell Webb in the weight throw, Olu Ogunyemi in the 60-meter hurdles, and Marvellous Asemota in the 60-meter sprint, all three of which won their respective competitions. Three other Lions earned podium positions on the day.

The first record to fall on the day was the women's 60-meter sprint school record. Asemota started the day by tying Sharrona Williams' old mark of 7.50 seconds, which has stood since the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 23, 2017, in the preliminaries, giving her the fastest time of the round and advancing her to the final. It was in the final where she took the record for her own possession by besting that time by 0.04 seconds, stopping the clock in 7.46 seconds to take home the gold medal.

Right after the 60-meter sprints was the 60-meter hurdles, and that's where the second Southeastern school record fell by the wayside. After missing his own school record by just 0.01 seconds in the prelims, qualifying for the final with a time of 8.05 seconds, Olu Ogunyemi destroyed the school record time of 8.04 seconds, which has stood since Ogunyemi originally broke it at the SLC Indoor Championships on Feb. 27, 2023 and tied at the LSU Purple Tiger on Jan. 12, 2024, in the final by stopping the clock in a record-breaking time of 7.91 seconds in the final to take home the win.

The third record to be broken by a Lion on the day was the Vulcan Invitational weight throw meet record. On his second toss of the day, Terrell Webb made sure he got the extra three throws by becoming the only athlete in the competition to cross 20 meters with a legal toss of 20.79 meters (68'2.5"), moving him into first place and qualifying him for the final. It was in his first throw in the finals, fourth throw overall, where he made history by uncorking a legal throw of 21.56 meters (70'9"). That mark broke the old meet record of 21.00 meters, which had been set by the University of Tennessee's Seth Whitener on Jan. 13, 2018, and secured him another weight throw gold medal in 2025. The throw also moved him back into the top-30 in all of Division I, giving him the 27th-longest weight throw this year as he continues to battle for a spot in the NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships.

Other top finishers for Southeastern were Donroy Brown in the shot put as his throw of 16.35 meters (53'7.75") earned him a silver medal finish, Onyah Favour took home the bronze in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 54.62 seconds, and the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Favour, Miriam Kauer, Esther Nwanze, and DaNina Sorapuru also won a bronze medal by finishing with a time of 3:49.13.

The Lions now enjoy a week of recovery in preparation for the LSU Twilight on Feb. 21 at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse in Baton Rouge in the final tune-up meet before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships, which will be held back in Birmingham.
