NEW ORLEANS – Behind top-10 showings from freshmen
Viggo Hed and
Preston Paulk, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's golf team is in fourth place after the first day of play at the Gulf Coast Collegiate Monday at English Turn Golf and Country Club.
Due to darkness, play was suspended with three holes remaining in the second round. Second round play will be completed at 8 a.m. Tuesday with the final round coming immediately following the culmination of round two.
Southeastern is currently at five-over par for the tournament, seven strokes behind day one leaders ULM and Central Arkansas, which each shot two-under par. After posting a 295 in the first round, SLU is currently two-under par in the second round, which is still in progress.
"We've given ourselves a chance heading into Tuesday," Southeastern head coach
Lawrence Allan said. "Viggo and Preston both really played well for us and are in contention for individual medalist honors. We faced some wet, windy course conditions in round one much like we did a couple of weeks ago in the spring opener. It was very encouraging to see us handle the adverse playing conditions much better than we did in our last tournament."
Hed had the lead after the first round after carding a 70 (-2) over the opening 18 holes. Sitting at even par in round two, Hed is currently in fourth place, one shot behind day one leaders Theis Poulsen and Louis Anceaux of ULM, as well as UT Martin's Garrett Chumley.
Paulk is in the midst of an excellent second round and is four-under par with three holes remaining. He finished Monday one-under par and is currently in seventh place.
Griffin Dorr was even par after round one, but has dropped three shots in round two and is currently tied for 24
th place (+3). After an opening round 78,
Colby Sullivan is one-under par in round two and is tied for 42
nd (+5) heading into the final day.
Ethan Dial (+15, 85
th) rounds out the SLU starting five, while
Noah Bumgarner (+11, T68th) is representing the Lions as an individual.
