SLU Closes Pre-SLC Slate with Busy Week

Southeastern (5-1) hosts Loyola Tuesday at 5:00, travels to Southern Thursday at 2:00, welcomes USM Friday at 2:00

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team will close out the pre-Southland Conference portion of its schedule this week with three nonconference matches on tap.

SLU (5-1) carries a four-match win streak into the week, which starts Tuesday with a 5 p.m. match versus Loyola (N.O.) (4-1) at the Southeastern Tennis Complex. The Lions then travel to Southern (0-2) for a 2 p.m. match Thursday, before returning home to host Southern Miss (3-1) Friday at 2 p.m.

Leana Gomez continues to lead the Lions with a 5-1 singles record. The Miami, Florida native is one of six SLU players with winning singles marks, along with Aitana Darder (4-1), Taisia Bolsova (4-2), Claudia Di Leonardo (4-2), Panatchakorn Suanarsa (4-2) and Kate Oborina (1-0).

Suanarsa and Bente Bierma have won four straight matches on the No. 1 court and boast a team-best 5-1 doubles record. The No. 2 team of Darder and Gomez, as well as the No. 3 team of Bolsova and Bogi Csordas are both 3-3 this spring.

Loyola (N.O.) is currently ranked eighth nationally at the NAIA level. The Wolfpack opened the spring with a 4-3 victory over SLU's conference rival Nicholls last month. SLU earned a 4-3 win last spring in Hammond in the most recent matchup between the two teams.

Southern will be looking for its first win of the spring Thursday. SLU won, 5-2, last February at home when it last faced the Jaguars.

Southern Miss will be facing its fourth SLC member when it comes to town Friday. The Golden Eagles boast wins over Northwestern State and Nicholls, sandwiched around a 4-2 loss to New Orleans. USM bested SLU, 5-1, last season.

Following this week's action, Southeastern will open up Southland Conference play with a 1 p.m. match at UTRGV March 1.
