HAMMOND, La. –The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team will open the spring portion of its 2024-25 schedule Saturday, welcoming LSU Alexandria to town for a 2 p.m. match at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
The spring opener for SLU was originally scheduled for Sunday, but has been moved up a day due to the possibility of inclement weather in the Hammond area.
Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes is anxious to see if his team can carry over the momentum from a successful fall.
"It will be key for us to build on the lessons we learned during October and November," Hayes commented. "We just got back on campus and the weather affected our practice schedule, so I'm anxious to see how we respond. The lack of practice will only be a factor if we don't remember what we've learned."
In doubles play, Hayes expects to start the spring with the pairings of
Bente Bierma and
Panatchakorn Suanarsa,
Aitana Darder and
Leana Gomez, as well as
Taisia Bolsova and
Bogi Csordas. In singles play, Gomez, Bierma, Suanarsa, Darder, Bolsova and
Claudia Di Leonardo are expected to get the start to open the season.
"We're really excited about where we are from a talent standpoint," Hayes said. "The key for us this spring is can we be as smart on the court as we are in the classroom. If we can, we can be a force."
Saturday's match will be the first of four straight home contests for the Lions to start the spring slate. UL Lafayette visits Tuesday for a 1 p.m. match at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
