HAMMOND, La. – Will Warren, the New York Yankees' eighth-round draft pick in 2021 out of Southeastern Louisiana University, was saddled with a no-decision in his Major League debut Tuesday, a 7-6 Yankee win in 12 innings at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The right-hander from Brandon, Mississippi allowed four runs in 5.1 innings of work. He scattered four hits and two walks, striking out six Phillies hitters.
Warren picked up the first strikeout of his MLB career in the first inning, whiffing Bryce Harper. He later struck out the side, in order, in the fifth. After surrendering a three-run home run in the second, Warren retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced.
Tabbed as the Yankees' No. 7-ranked minor league prospect by Baseball America, Warren received the call-up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier in the day after former Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole was scratched from his scheduled start.
Warren lettered at Southeastern from 2018-2021, finishing with a 13-10 won-loss record and a 3.90 ERA in his Lion career. He is the eleventh player in program history to reach the majors and the first to make his MLB debut since Mac Sceroler with the Baltimore Oriioles on April 5, 2021 against the Yankees.
