HAMMOND, La. – The Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team capped a historic 2024 season by once again leading Division I in stolen bases.
The 2024 softball season wrapped up last Thursday when Oklahoma earned its fourth consecutive national championship with an 8-4 win over Texas. At the end of the season, the Lady Lions led all Division I schools with 175 steals.
During the nine-year tenure of head coach
Rick Fremin, Southeastern has led the nation in either total stolen bases or stolen bases per game in eight seasons. SLU, which finished third this spring in stolen bases per game, led the nation in one of those categories every season from 2016-22. The Lady Lions were tops in the country in both total stolen bases and stolen bases per game in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
Southeastern's nation-best stolen base total was a total team effort, as eight Lady Lions contributed double-digit steals. SLC Hitter of the Year
Ka'Lyn Watson paced SLU with 31 stolen bases, followed by
Chloe Magee (29),
Cam Goodman (25),
Audrey Greely (20),
Colleen Kulivan (17),
Bailey Krolczyk (14),
Brilee Broussard (13) and
Maria Detillier (10).
On the way to its first-ever conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance, Southeastern was among the national leaders in much more than steals. SLU finished the spring in the top 20 nationally in batting average (.339, 6
th), earned run average (2.06, 13
th), won-loss percentage (.758, 13
th), wins (47, 11
th), shutouts (15, 10
th), triples per game (0.39, 4
th) and on-base percentage (.404, 16
th).
The 2024 Lady Lions also broke or tied single-season school records in multiple categories while advancing to the championship game of the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional. Southeastern set or matched program standards for wins, shutouts, at-bats (1,582), runs (369), hits (537), triples (24), batting average, games played (62), on-base percentage, sacrifice flies (20), innings pitched (400.1), putouts (1,200) and fielding percentage (.965).
Four SLU senior standouts also etched their names in the record books, as
Ka'Lyn Watson set a new single-season school record with 55 runs scored, while Krolczyk tied her own mark with 29 extra-base hits for the second straight season. In the field, first baseman
Lexi Johnson set new school records for putouts (486) and total chances (502). Greely finished her career having played in a school-record 245 games.
The Lady Lions' unprecedented team success resulted in the most individual honors in program history.
Ka'Lyn Watson, Magee, Greely, Krolczyk and
Cera Blanchard gave Southeastern a school-record five first team All-SLC selections, while the second team picks of Goodman, Johnson and
Ellie DuBois ran SLU's all-conference total to eight – another school mark. DuBois, Blanchard, Johnson and Detillier helped the Lady Lions tie a school mark with four SLC All-Academic selections Monday.
Southeastern will open the 2025 season at the LSU Invitational Feb. 7-9. SLU is slated to begin its eight-game fall scrimmage schedule Sept. 27 with a 5 p.m., 10-inning exhibition game versus Northeast Alabama Community College at North Oak Park.
