Fr. sprinter Onyah Favour earned her first collegiate individual honor by being named SLC Freshman of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team picked up a postseason award as
Onyah Favour was named the Southland Conference's Women's Track & Field Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Favour, a freshman from Asaba, Nigeria, made an immediate impact as, in just her third meet as a Lady Lion, she was part of the 4x400-meter relay team which broke the Southeastern indoor school record at the Samford Bulldog Invitational by completing the relay in 3:45.21. She continued her success to the SLC's Indoor Championships where she earned SLU points in both the 400-meter dash, with a fifth-place finish, and the 4x400-meter relay, where the Lady Lions finished fourth.
But she saved some of her best work for when it was needed the most, setting her personal best in her main discipline, the 400-meter dash, in the SLC Outdoor Championships finals as she raced to a fourth-place finish with a time of 53.51, a time good enough to earn her a spot in the NCAA Division I National Championships East First Round. She was also part of the SLU 4x400-meter relay team at the SLC Outdoor Championships which also finished fourth in a time of 3:45.10.
Other races she competed in during her freshman campaign, and her best times in those disciplines are 1:41.73 in the 600-meter run at the LSU Purple Tiger, 7.89 seconds in the 60-meter sprint at the LSU Twilight, 2:23.40 in the 800-meter run at the Louisiana Classics, and 24.94 seconds in the 200-meter dash at the Strawberry Relays.
This award is Favour's first career individual award.
