Jr. thrower Donroy Brown throws his way to a bronze medal in the shot put at the SLC Outdoor Championships
Day One Recap
HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team earned its second medal of the 2024 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships thanks to
Donroy Brown's bronze medal-winning throw in the shot put on Friday at the Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field on the campus of Rice University.
Brown's bronze medal-winning toss came in the day's opening event, the men's shot put. His second throw of the day went 17.70 meters (58'0.75") to ensure that he would be in the top-nine and get a second set of three throws. That's where he would reset his personal best in the discipline as his sixth, and final, throw went 18.14 meters (59'6.25") to confirm his spot on the medal stand while also moving him into the top-48 in the East Region which would earn him a spot in the Regional Championships, should it hold. His third-place finish in outdoor matches the first year Lion's bronze medal that he won at the SLC Indoor Track & Field Championships back in February. That result also added six points to the Southeastern men's overall team score.
While Brown secures SLU's lone points on the day, several other Lions earned spots in Saturday's track finals on Friday night.
Onyah Favour earned herself a spot in the women's 400-meter dash final by winning the third preliminary heat in a personal best time of 54.10 seconds to automatically qualify for Saturday's championship race.
Back on the men's side, four other Lions earned spots in the last eight. In the men's 400-meter dash,
Javon-Taye Williams and
Victory Achakpoekri cemented their spots in the medal race as Williams took second in the second heat by finishing in a time of 47.29 seconds while Achakpoekri preceded that with a third-place finish in the first heat with a time of 47.69 seconds, which stayed above the cut line to qualify for the final.
The next race was the 800-meter run, and again two Lions were fast enough to qualify on time to make the final. In the second heat,
Noah Kiprotich finished second by crossing the line in 1:53.49. As Kiprotich watched to see if his time would stay above the cut line,
Tim Anstett would be one who would jump above him as Anstett finished second in the fourth heat, stopping the clock in a time of 1:52.55. When the fifth, and final, heat ended, both were still faster than the cut time and were assured a spot in Saturday's final.
After the second day of competition, the Lions remained in fifth with 16 total team points while the Lady Lions were in sixth overall at 10 team points.
