KINDER, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's golf team earned its first victory under head coach
Lawrence Allan, taking home the tournament title at the Koasati Pines Intercollegiate, which wrapped up Tuesday at Koasati Pines Golf Club.
Southeastern finished with a three-day tournament score of 846 (-18) to best runner-up Stephen F. Austin (-15) by three strokes and top an 11-team field that included four Southland Conference rivals. The team tournament victory was the first for the Lions since winning the 2022 SLC title.
"We've shown the potential to do this for the past year, but we haven't been able to put together three consecutive rounds together as a team," Allan commented. "This week is a great example of how we've grown and learned from our close calls earlier this season."
After his first victory as the Lions' head coach, Allan, a multi-time All-SLC performer during his playing career at SLU, was quick to praise the efforts of the student-athletes.
"This is a great feeling, but it's definitely different winning as a coach than as a player," Allan said. "I'm just super proud of our group and the difference today is how we were able to finish strong."
In a back-and-forth battle with the Lumberjacks, the Lions pulled away on the home stretch.
Patrick Blaum birdied his final two holes, while both
Ethan Dial and
Grayson Glorioso close out their respective rounds with birdies.
Blaum was SLU's top finisher, carding a 210 (-6) for the tournament – good for a tie for third place and two shots behind co-individual medalists Jaxon Griffith of Stephen F. Austin and Texas Southern's Liam O'Rourke.
Blaum was one of three Lions to finish in the top 10 in the individual standings.
Landen East (-5) was all alone in sixth place, while Dial finished one stroke back of East in seventh place.
Glorioso and
Colby Sullivan both finished in a tie for 23
rd at two-over par for the week to round out the Southeastern lineup.
Griffin Dorr (+11, T48th) represented SLU as an individual.
Allan's Lions closed out the regular season on a high note and head into the Southland Conference Championships with momentum.
"This win gives us a lot of confidence heading into the Southland Conference tournament," Allan said. "Our performance this week just confirms what we believed we were capable of when we put three rounds together."
The SLC Championships are set for April 22-24 at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas.
