Lions Take Home 13 Medals, Six Gold, from Pelican Relays

Numerous Personal or Season Bests are Set Saturday in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team made the most of its day in the Louisiana state capitol city, getting 13 podium spots while winning six competitions at the Pelican Relays on Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium on the campus of Southern University.
 
Southeastern's day started in dominant fashion in the field as the Lions took the top four spots in the men's discus competition. Terrell Webb took home the gold as his best throw of the day went 47.10 meters (154'6") while Micah Miller stood on the silver podium with a best throw of 46.69 meters (153'2") and Gabriel Lim rounded out the all-SLU podium with a throw of 45.60 meters (149'7"). Donroy Brown finished just behind them with a personal best throw of 45.36 meters (148'10"), good enough for fourth.
 
Next was the triple jump, which saw both the men and women get top-three finishes. For the Lady Lions, Natalie Ioannou brought home a bronze as her longest jump of the day was also her best so far this season, leaping 11.29 meters (37'0.5"). While that was happening, Stan Hamilton was working on winning silver for the SLU men as his best jump of the day went 14.15 meters (46'5.25"), good enough for a second-place finish in the competition.
 
Southeastern's final field medals of the day came in the men's shot put as both Brown and Porter Gibson earned podium spots. After just missing a medal in the discus, Brown made sure he got his in the shot put as he launched a gold medal-winning throw of 15.73 meters (51'7.25") to take the top step while Gibson earned the final step with his toss of 14.39 meters (47'2.5") earned him a bronze.
 
The Lady Lions blazed the track to start the running competitions. Alivia Buley earned SLU's first track medal of the day as she set a new personal best in the 1,500-meter run, stopping the clock in 5:22.0 to win the gold medal. Next was the 400-meter dash and two Lady Lions had their best runs of the season in order to win medals in that race. Esther Nwanze ran a personal best of 54.42 seconds to take home the gold while Onyah Favour finished right behind her to take silver, stopping the clock in a personal best time of 54.67 seconds. SLU's final medal in the women's competitions came in the 100-meter sprint as Immaculate Danial beat the field to the line in 12.00 seconds to win the gold.
 
On the men's side of the track competition, Southeastern took home two medals to round out the day. Darian Chestnut got the first in a solid SLU showing in the 800-meter dash as five Lions finished in the top-10. Chestnut took the bronze with a season-best time of 1:55.51. Joel Boerkey set a new personal best by finishing fifth in 1:56.00 while Noah Kiprotich was right behind him in a time of 1:56.15 for a sixth-place finish. Josh Anding also set a personal best as his time of 1:56.88 put him in eighth while Courtlin Baunchand rounded out the top-10 with a personal best time of 1:57.05, finishing in 10th. Edwin Portillo also set a personal best by stopping the clock in 1:58.69 and in 15th overall. The last medal for the Lions was also the sixth gold of the day for the Lions, which was won by Euan Lagan, who took the top spot in the 3,000-meter run by breaking the tape in a time of 9:12.32.
 
Other top marks for Southeastern competitors on the day belonged to Dardlie Lefevre in the long jump as her best jump took her 4.99 meters (16'4.5"), the longest of her collegiate career. Victory Achakpoekri ran his fastest 400-meter sprint of the season, crossing the line in 48.91 seconds which seated him sixth in the competition on the day.
 
The Lions look to continue their improvement on Friday as Southeastern hosts the Strawberry Relays at the Southeastern Track Complex. The Strawberry Relays start at 9 a.m. on Friday with the discus throw competition in the field and the 3,000-meter steeplechase on the track. Live timing of the Strawberry Relays will be available.
