HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University softball team to a 5-0 week, junior infielder Maddie Watson was named the Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Hitter of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday.
 
Watson received the honor for the second time this season, having previously won the honor March 4. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native earned SLC weekly recognition for the third time in her career and is one of five Lady Lions, along with Audrey Greely, Lexi Johnson, Bailey Krolczyk and Ellie DuBois, to receive weekly honors from the league this spring.  
 
Last week, Southeastern (42-10, 17-4 SLC) swept a nonconference doubleheader from Alcorn State, before earning three straight run-rule victories over Lamar in a three-game conference series sweep. Watson led SLU with a .727 batting average (8-for-11) in the five wins, including two doubles and four RBI.
 
Watson is hitting .313 on the season, as all nine Southeastern positional starters are hitting .300 or above heading into the final series of the regular season. SLU is currently fourth in Division I with a .350 team batting average.
 
The Lady Lions will be no lower than the No. 2 seed in the 2024 North Oaks Health System Southland Conference Championships, set for May 7-10 in Hammond, Louisiana at North Oak Park. Tickets for the tournament are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.Southland.org/tickets.
 
If SLU can sweep McNeese this weekend in Lake Charles, it can vault to the top seed and win the SLC regular season title. The series at the Cowgirls opens with a 6 p.m. contest Friday and concludes with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. All three games will be televised live on ESPN+.
