HAMMOND, La. – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University softball team to three wins at the Ole Miss Classic, junior infielder Maddie Watson was named the Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Hitter of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday.
 
Watson is the third Southeastern player to claim SLC weekly honors this season, joining teammates Bailey Krolczyk (Feb. 12) and Ellie DuBois (Feb. 19). The weekly honor is the second of the Baton Rouge, Louisiana native's career, as she previously was named Southland Hitter of the Week April 26, 2022.
 
Watson led Southeastern with a .545 batting average during a 3-2 week that saw the Lady Lions defeat Ole Miss, Kent State and UAB. Her two-run single versus Ole Miss forced extra innings in an eventual 9-4 Southeastern victory – the team's third over a Power 5 this season.
 
After seeing her numbers dip as a sophomore, Watson is back to the level she performed at during her All-Southland Conference freshman campaign. Through 20 games, she is third on the team with a .396 batting average, while leading the team with four doubles and 10 walks.
 
Southeastern (15-5) returns home this week for four games at North Oak Park. SLU closes out its pre-Southland schedule Wednesday, hosting Southern Miss at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard in the Hammond area on 90.9 The Lion and online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive.
