Both Lions Teams Finish Eighth in Team Standings at 2024 SLC Indoor Championships

Day 1 Recap

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field team got a gold medal-winning performance from Lance Hamilton in the triple jump while Esther Nwanze and Donroy Brown also medaled, leading both the men's and women's teams to eighth-place finishes in the 2024 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Southeastern's first points on the day came on the track as Immaculate Danial took part in the 60-meter dash final, finishing in seventh with a time of 7.67 and gaining the Lady Lions two points in the team competition.

The 400-meter dash proved to be the most fruitful competition for the Lady Lions as SLU earned 12 team points from the discipline while also earning the team's lone medal of the competition. After both qualifying on time on Sunday, Nwanze raced to a silver medal and eight team points on Monday, crossing the line in a personal best time of 54.45 seconds while Onyah Favour also ran the fastest time of her freshman campaign, crossing the finish line in 55.26 seconds for a fifth-place finish and four points in the overall competition.

Over on the field, the men's team was continuing a solid showing, growing off the golds won by Terrell Webb and Slavko Stevic on Sunday, as another gold medal came home with the Lions while multiple point-winning positions ended up being taken by SLU, earned on the legs of a set of brothers in the triple jump. Lance Hamilton moved into the top-100 of the country in the triple jump as his third jump of the day went a personal best 15.18 meters (49'9.75"), one of just two competitors on the day to surpass 15 meters and enough to earn him the top step on the final podium and 10 points for Southeastern. His brother, Stan Hamilton, got his best jump of the day on his second attempt, traveling 14.50 meters (47'7") to soar to a seventh-place finish on the day and two points in the team competition.

While the Hamilton brothers were helping improve Southeastern's place in the standings in the triple jump, Brown was doing the same over at the shot put. After his toss of 17.02 meters (55'10.25") on his first attempt qualified him into the finals, it was his sixth and final toss that made sure he got a spot on the podium as his last toss of the day went 17.28 meters, a new personal best and good enough for the bronze medal and six points for the team standings.

Back on the track, the men's team's final points came from Tim Anstett and Javon-Taye Williams. Both qualified for the 800-meter final on Sunday, with Anstett winning his heat to qualify automatically and Williams earning a spot in the final on time. In Monday's final, Anstett crossed the line in 1:57.87, finishing in seventh and earning two points while Williams stopped the clock at 1:59.14 for an eighth-place finish and another point added to the team score.

Southeastern's final points of the competition came from the women's 4x400-meter relay team as Nwanze, Favour, Porsha Miles, and Miriam Kauer teamed up to cross the finish line in 3:49.67, good for a fourth-place finish and collect a final five points for the Lady Lions.

The Lions ended the 2024 SLC Indoor Championships with 48 total points, good for an eighth-place finish in the team standings while the Lady Lions scored 25 total points, also good to slot in eighth in the overall table at the end of the two days of competition.

Southeastern now awaits word on if the team will receive any invites to the 2024 NCAA Indoor National Championships, which runs March 8th-9th in Boston, Mass. At The Track at New Balance. The 2024 outdoor track & field schedule starts on March 15th in Ruston, La. at the Jim Mize Invitational, hosted by Louisiana Tech, at the Jim Mize Track & Field Complex.
