HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team opens the 2024 season, the men's and women's basketball teams attempt to continue their respective Southland Conference winning streaks, the softball team looks to build on its historic start, the track and field teams compete in their final tune-up before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships and the beach volleyball team gears up for the 2024 season during this week in Southeastern Athletics.
 
The Bobby Barbier Era officially opens this week at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, as the Lion baseball team hosts Tarleton State for a three-game series. The series opens with a 6 p.m. contest Friday, continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.  
 
Friday's game sponsor is Vexus Fiber. Southeastern will play Bingo at the Ballpark every home Saturday at both the Pat and the home of SLU softball, North Oak Park. Every SLU baseball home Sunday will be dedicated to military appreciation, as all active military will receive free admission.
 
The Southeastern women's basketball team (15-8, 11-1 SLC) enters the week on a four-game win streak heading into the biggest regular season game of the season. The outright Southland Conference lead will be on the line Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Pride Roofing University Center. Thursday is Greek Night at the PRUC, as Southeastern Athletics encourages all fraternity and sorority members to join us for Thursday's contest. Halftime will feature a sorority step show.
 
Southeastern welcomes HCU for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday in the University Center. Saturday will be the Daddy and Daughter game, as all girls aged 14 and under will receive free admission.
 
Jen Pierre (Thursday) and Taylor Bell (Saturday) will be this week's Spotlight Players of the Game. The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring that day's Spotlight Player of the Game, courtesy of PRIDE.
 
The SLU men's basketball team (11-13, 6-5 SLC) will look to continue its own four-game winning streak. Southeastern opens the week with a 7 p.m. SLC contest Monday at 7 p.m. The Lions the return home to host HCU at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Saturday will be Family and Alumni Day in the Pride Roofing University Center and all former Lions are invited to return and be recognized at halftime. Tangi Tourism will be the game sponsor for Saturday's hoops doubleheader.
 
The Lady Lion softball team (5-0) set a school record with five consecutive shutouts at last week's Mardi Gras Mambo. Southeastern, which outscored its opponents, 31-0, will close out a six-game road swing Wednesday with a 5 p.m. contest at Louisiana Tech.
 
Southeastern opens its 2024 home slate this weekend, hosting Maryland, Syracuse and Southeast Missouri for the Lion Classic at North Oak Park. SLU faces Syracuse Friday at 4 p.m., before facing Maryland at 1 p.m. and Southeast Missouri at 5 p.m. Saturday.
 
The Southeastern men's and women's track and field teams will compete in its final meet before the SLC indoor championship meet, which is set for Feb. 25-26 in Birmingham, Ala. The Lions and Lady Lions will be in Baton Rouge Friday for the LSU Twilight meet at 10 a.m.
 
Fans will have the opportunity to get a preseason look at the SLU beach volleyball team this week. The Beach Lions will host an intrasquad match Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Southeastern Beach Volleyball Clinic.
 
On the Air
All of this week's basketball action and baseball will be televised on ESPN+. Every baseball game, Monday's men's basketball contest and Thursday's women's basketball game will be heard in the Hammond area on 90.9 The Lion.
 
The debut season of Inside Southeastern Baseball with Bobby Barbier begins Monday and will air every Monday at noon from WiseGuys Daiquiris (14372 University Ave.) in Hammond. Barbier and host Allen Waddell will talk all things Lion baseball weekly on 90.9 The Lion.
 
The latest episode of "Inside Southeastern Basketball with David Kiefer" airs Tuesday at 7 p.m. on 90.9 The Lion, live from the Hammond location of Rainbow Daiquiris (14834 W. Thomas St.). The show will air Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through March 5 with Kiefer and host Mark Willoughby discussing all things Lion Basketball.
