HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University sophomores
Bente Bierma and
Leana Gomez will represent the Lion women's tennis team at the ITA Southern Regional Championships, which open Thursday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Alabama.
Bierma will face off Thursday at 11:30 a.m. versus Jacksonville State's Anna Syrova in the opening qualifying match. The winner of the Bierma-Syrova match will move on to face Margaret Jaraczewski of Samford Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Gomez's opening opponent had not been determined as of Wednesday. Bierma and Gomez will also team together in the doubles draw.
This spring, Bierma led SLU with nine singles victories, finishing 9-8 in her first collegiate season. Gomez also made her debut in the green and gold earlier in 2024, finishing 7-9 overall and sharing the team lead with three Southland Conference singles victories.
Bierma and Gomez also teamed in doubles, predominantly on the No. 1 court. The duo earned wins over Lamar, St. Thomas, Louisiana Christian and Grambling.
"We've been working hard this fall and having some great practices," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes commented. "This will be an excellent opportunity for Bente and Leana to test themselves versus high-quality competition."
Following this week's action, Southeastern will next return to the courts at the Dillard Invitational Oct. 18-19 in New Orleans.
