Hed Claims Individual Medalist Honors at Husky Intercollegiate

SLU freshman caps impressive fall with first collegiate win

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana University freshman Viggo Hed claimed individual medalist honors at the Husky Intercollegiate, which wrapped up Tuesday at Riverbend Country Club.

Hed, a native of Halmstad, Sweden, carded a final-round 69 to finish with a tournament score of 211 (-5). Hed bested runners-up Pablo Rivero and Rohan Gopaldas, both of DePaul, by two strokes for his first collegiate victory in only his fourth tournament as a Lion.

"Viggo was phenomenal this week," SLU head coach Lawrence Allan commented. "I walked the back nine with him today and he was rock solid finishing it out. He deserved to win this week and we're definitely not surprised that he was able to break through and get his first victory."

Hed has been the Lions' top performer in his debut fall in Hammond. The Southland Conference Golfer of the Month shot under par in all four of his tournaments and posted a 70.7 stroke average.

Hed was not the only Lion to finish high on the individual leaderboard. Griffin Dorr finished just behind Head and the DePaul duo in a tie for fourth place at -2 for the week.

"Griffin played extremely well this week," Allan said. "He performed even better than his fourth-place finish. Griffin could've easily challenged Viggo for the top spot."

In the final tournament for SLU in the fall portion of its 2024-25 schedule, the Lions finished with a team score of 892 (+28) and were in a tie for seventh in the team standings. DePaul (+2) maintained its day one lead and won by seven strokes over host and runner-up HCU.

With the fall season behind him, Allan is encouraged with the spring prospects for his team.

"We knew that Viggo was a special talent, but he's come along quicker than we even expected," Allan commented. "Griffin played his best golf as the fall season progressed and we were pleasantly surprised with Preston Paulk, who has shown that he has a bright future. Patrick (Blaum), Landen (East) and Colby (Sullivan) didn't have their best stuff this fall, but if we can get them playing how they're capable of, we have a chance to have a really strong showing this spring."

Southeastern will open the spring season Feb. 10-11 at the Bentwater Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Texas.
