Stevic, Krolczyk Named 2022-23 SLU Athletes of the Year

Track and softball junior standouts honored

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University named juniors Slavko Stevic and Bailey Krolczyk the school's 2022-23 Athletes of the Year Thursday.

Stevic and Krolczyk will be honored as part of the inaugural Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet presented by North Oaks Health System Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. in the War Memorial Student Union Ballroom. Tickets for the event are available by visiting www.LionSports.net/HOF.

The SLU Male and Female Athlete of the Year has been presented to the department's top performers. Stevic is the 10th member of the track and field program to receive the honor and the first since Alex Young and Ashley Davis swept the award in 2016-17.

Krolczyk is the second straight softball player to receive Female Athlete of the Year, as former teammate Aeriyl Mass was named the 2021-22 SLU Female Athlete of the Year. Krolczyk is the sixth member of the softball program to take home the award, joining Mass, Jaquelyn Ramon (2018-19), Mahalia Gibson (2017-18), Katie Duhe (2010-11) and Sarah Gascon (2002-03).

Stevic, a native of Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, established himself as one of the nation's premier high jumpers, earning All-America honors at both the NCAA Outdoor and Indoor Championships, while winning the Southland Conference championship in the event at both the league indoor and outdoor meets.

Stevic set new school records during both the indoor (2.21 meters/7-3) and outdoor (2.22 meters/7-3.25) season. An outstanding student, Stevic was named the SLU Indoor and Outdoor Student-Athlete of the Year.

Krolczyk was a key contributor to Southeastern's single-season school record 47th victory, as the Corpus Christi, Texas native was the first player in program history to be named Southland Conference Player and Hitter of the Year. She also was named first team All-SLC, first team All-Louisiana and third team NFCA All-South Region.

Krolczyk set single-season school records for extra-base hits (29), total bases (117) and longest hitting streak (22). She led the SLC in slugging percentage (.661), OPS (1.057), hits (67), RBI (50), doubles (18) and home runs (10), while ranking second in the league with a .379 batting average and 39 runs scored.

Stevic was the winner out of a male finalist list that included the department's other All-American in John Allen (football), the SLC Offensive Lineman of the Year, as well as Southland Golfer of the Year Charlie Forster, first team All-SLC guard Boogie Anderson and the baseball program's career steals leader in Tyler Finke.

Krolczyk topped a female finalist list that included SLC Tournament MVP's Hailey Giaratano and Kailin Newsome, who led the women's basketball and indoor volleyball teams, respectively, to their first SLC championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Mya Guillory was named the conference's Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year, while Kristian Jackson represented the Lady Lions at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Round and won the SLC championship in the discus. Tennis' Putri Insani was named All-Southland Conference for the fifth time, while Jolie Hidalgo represented the Beach Lions on the Academic All-District team.

The 2022-23 SLU Athlete of the Year was selected by the department's head coaches and administrative staff.
