Jr. sprinter Eugene Omalla celebrates as he crosses the finish line to secure the SLC 4x400m relay gold & a NCAA First Round spot
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team will send eight of its members to Jacksonville, Fla. for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships East First Round next week after the list of participants was released by the NCAA on Thursday.
The Lady Lions will send two of its best field athletes to Jacksonville.
Katrine Olsen made it for the high jump competition as her 1.77-meter (5'9.75") jump at the Southland Conference Championships didn't just get her a silver medal, but also earned her a spot in the regional.
Kristian Jackson, who was teetering on qualifying in two events, will take part in the discus competition, a discipline she won the SLC championship in, as her 54.40-meter (178'6") throw at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in late April stood up for qualification.
Southeastern's men will be represented by six competitors across six events over the four days of the regional.
In the field, the Lions will be represented by
Slavko Stevic, the Southland Conference champion in the high jump. He qualified based on his performance on his home field as his 2.22-meter (7'3.25") jump at the Strawberry Relays in mid-April earned him a spot.
Terrell Webb, who won the SLC gold in the hammer throw, will compete in that event in the regional as his 64.09-meter (210'3") throw at the Pelican Relays in early April earned him a spot in the competition.
On the track, SLU has four competitors ready to compete in four separate events.
Eugene Omalla ran his best time of the outdoor season by finishing the 400-meter dash in 46.06 seconds on his way to a dominating gold medal at the Southland Conference Championships and in doing so secured himself a spot in the regional.
Javon-Taye Williams, who took gold in the 800-meter run at the SLC Championships, earned a spot in the 800-meter field for a regional as his 1:48.64 from the Pelican Relays held.
Agerian Jackson, whose best time of 51.21 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles earned him a silver medal at the SLC Championships, will fill a lane in that discipline in the regional thanks to that performance.
All three of those runners will join
Jaimie Omalla on the 4x400-meter relay team as the team's 3:06.48 gold medal-winning time from the Southland Conference Championships earned the squad a spot in the relay at the regional.
Omri Shiff, who had a time worthy of joining Jackson in the 400-meter hurdles while also serving as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team, is being forced to bow out of the regional due to an injury he suffered during the Southland Conference Championships.
The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships East First Round runs May 24
