Southeastern Extends Win Streak to Nine With SLC Doubleheader Sweep at UIW

SLU (34-8, 9-2 SLC) goes for series sweep Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team extended its win streak to nine games with a Southland Conference doubleheader sweep of UIW Friday night at H-E-B Field.
 
Southeastern (34-8, 9-2 SLC) opened the night's action with a 12-8 win over UIW (11-20-1, 3-8 SLC). In the nightcap, SLU earned a 10-7 victory to clinch its fourth straight SLC series victory.
 
The Lady Lions finished with 14 hits in the opener, as Bailey Krolczyk led the way with two home runs and four RBI. Krolczyk and Audrey Greely each had three hits, while Sadie Hewitt chipped in with four RBI. Cam Goodman and Maddie Leal each had two hits, while Madison Rayner drove in a pair of runs.
 
KK Ladner (10-1) struck out four in 4.1 innings of work to earn the victory in game one. Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux threw the final 2.2 innings to close out the win.
 
Lexi Johnson hit her eighth home run of the season in the nightcap, as she, Ka'Lyn Watson, Maddie Watson and Rayner had two hits apiece to lead a 12-hit SLU attack. Ka'Lyn Watson led Southeastern with three RBI in the win.
 
Cera Blanchard (13-4) earned the win in the circle, striking out five in six innings of work. Comeaux threw a scoreless seventh to earn her second save of 2023 and extend her scoreless streak to 24.0 innings.
 
Southeastern will go for the series sweep Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at www.uiwcardinals.com/sidearmstats/softball.
 
Game One – Southeastern 12, UIW 8
UIW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but it was short-lived, as Southeastern sent 11 to the plate in a nine-run third inning. Rayner doubled home Goodman and Detillier for the inning's first two runs.
 
One out later, Krolczck bombed a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to put SLU on top. Later in the inning, Maddie Leal singled home a run, then Hewitt cleared the bases with a bases loaded double and scored on a UIW error to give SLU a commanding 9-3 lead.
 
UIW got a run back in the bottom of the third inning, but Krolczyk struck again. After a one-out double by Johnson, Krolczyk hit her second home run in as many innings to extend the Lady Lion advantage to 11-4.
 
The Cardinals cut the lead to 11-8 after five innings, but got no closer. Greely's RBI double in the top of the sixth inning provided the final margin for the SLU victory.

Game Two – Southeastern 10, UIW 7
Southeastern took the lead for good in the top of the first inning. After Goodman drew a leadoff walk, Rayner tripled her home one out later to put SLU on the board. Johnson then singled home Rayner to give Southeastern a 2-0 lead. Johnson would later score on a UIW error, then Ka'Lyn Watson doubled home the inning's final two runs home to put the Lady Lions up, 5-0.
 
The Cardinals got on the board in their half of the first inning, but SLU got the run back in the top of the second inning. Johnson drilled a home run well over the right centerfield fence to put Southeastern ahead, 6-1.
 
Consecutive RBI doubles by Ka'Lyn Watson and Cam Goodman extended the lead to 8-1 in the top of the third inning. In the top of the sixth, Rayner walked, Krolczyk extended her hit streak to 16 games – one off the school record - with a single, then Maddie Watson singled home a run to give Southeastern a 9-1 cushion.
 
The Lady Lions headed to the bottom of the sixth looking to close out the mercy rule victory. UIW had other ideas, sending 10 to the plate in a six-run inning, and cutting the SLU lead to 9-7.
 
A sacrifice fly by Detillier provided an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Comeaux closed out the win, stranding a pair of Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh inning.
