HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team was well-represented on the 2023 All-Southland Conference Tennis Teams, which were released by the league office Wednesday.
Lions
Carla Del Barrio and
Kate Oborina were second team selections at the No. 3 and 4 singles positions, respectively. The SLU doubles team of
Flory Bierma and
Putri Insani were second team choices at the No. 1 position.
In her first season with Southeastern after transferring from Nevada, Del Barrio posted a 9-8 overall record and 4-3 mark in Southland play on the No. 3 singles court. The Vigo, Spain native was named Southland Conference Player of the Week on March 14 and earned SLC singles wins over UIW, McNeese, New Orleans and Nicholls.
Oborina earned All-Southland Conference honors after finishing the regular season 10-6 overall and a team-best 5-2 in conference matches at No. 4. The Perm, Russia native defeated seven conference opponents in singles play this spring, as she earned wins over league affiliate members Bryant and NJIT, as well as UIW, McNeese, Lamar, UNO and Nicholls. She was one of three Lions to earn SLC Player of the Week accolades, taking home the honor April 11.
Bierma and Insani were named to the All-Southland Conference team as a doubles pair for the second straight season. SLU's top tandem were a team-best 12-5 overall and 5-2 versus league competition. Bierma and Insani topped teams from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, McNeese, Lamar, New Orleans and Northwestern State, while also earning a win versus SLC affiliate Bryant.
Insani, a native of Jakarta, Indonesia, received her fifth All-SLC honors, as she was an all-conference selection at No. 1 singles in 2019, 2021 and 2022. Bierma, a native of Kapelle, The Netherlands, is now a three-time All-SLC doubles performer, having been recognized with Insani the last two springs and former teammate Katya Cornejo in 2023.
The All-Southland Conference teams are voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Coaches and SID's are not allowed to vote for their own nominees.
UIW's Brandelyn Fulgenzi was named Player of the Year, while UNO's Didi Bredberg Canizares was tabbed Freshman of the Year. League regular season champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took home Newcomer of the Year (Naomi Moi McKenzie) and Coach of the Year (Steve Moore).
Southeastern will open Southland Conference Tournament play with a 10 a.m. first round match Thursday versus UNO in Corpus Christi, Texas. Live stats for the match will be accessible via the women's tennis schedule page at
