Jr. Slavko Stevic breaks the 38-year-old SLU high jump record during the Strawberry Relays
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team kept 15 gold medals on campus following Saturday's rain-impacted Strawberry Relays, but none bigger than
Slavko Stevic capturing his second high jump school record before the rains arrived at the Southeastern Track Complex.
Stevic's historic moment came late in the morning as his broke a SLU school record which had stood since 1985 as he successfully cleared 2.22 meters (7'3.25") in the high jump competition, besting the mark 2.20 meters (7'2.5") mark of Andy Steib. At the same time, it bested his own facility record for the Southeastern Track Complex which he set last season in a dual meet. The jump was a new personal best in the competition for Stevic while moving him up to third in all of Division I. He took gold in the Strawberry Relays by .12 meters and now holds the SLU school record in the high jump in both indoor and outdoor competition.
In the day's track results on the men's side,
Cohen Gallant equaled the best time in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.78 seconds, earning a silver medal while
Olu Ogunyemi took bronze with a time of 11.07 seconds.
Eugene Omalla took home gold in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.15 seconds. In the 400-meter run,
Javon-Taye Williams finished with the best time at 48.68 seconds while
Tristen Pugmire completed with a bronze medal-winning time of 49.84 seconds. In the 800-meter run, the Lions took the first two steps as
Noah Kiprotich took the gold with a time of 1:53.57 while
Darian Chestnut finished right behind him in 1:54.12.
Moving into the men's hurdles competition, Ogunyemi picked up a gold of his own in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.22 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles, it was Lion vs. Lion as
Agerian Jackson bested Ogunyemi in the two-man race for gold as his 52.47 bested Ogunyemi's 52.70. In the 4x400-meter relay, the Southeastern quartet of Jackson, Damon Morton, Jr.,
Jaimie Omalla, and
Omri Shiff took silver with a time of 3:20.65.
Along with Stevic's historic high jump, the Lions men took home numerous other medals in the field competition.
Dedrick Gant took back a gold in the long jump with a jump of 6.47 meters (21'2.75"). SLU competitors filled the final two steps for the shot put competition as
Micah Miller won silver with a throw of 13.92 meters (45'8") while
Seth Pagart took bronze with a toss of 13.66 meters (44'9.75"). The top two steps were filled with Lions in the discus contest as
Thomas Nedow took gold with a throw of 51.81 meters (170') while Miller took his second silver with a told of 45.55 meters (149'5").
Terrell Webb continued his domination of the hammer throw with a toss of 62.79 meters (206'). He rounded out the day with a bronze in the javelin as he made a throe of 48.25 meters (158'4").
On the women's side on the track,
Katelyn Wallace earned a silver in the 100-meter dash in 12.62 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, Alexandra Cleveland won gold in a time of 25.60 seconds while Jacqueline Thring earned bronze in a time of 25.76 seconds. Moving up to the 800-meter run,
Laney Wilkes took home a bronze medal with a time of 2:30.03.
In the hurdles, Lions took the top two steps in the 400-meter competition as
Esther Nwanze took gold with a time of 1:02.93 while
Indya Jackson finished right behind her in second in 1:03.08.
In the field for the women,
Katrine Olsen brought home the gold in the high jump as she cleared 1.75 meters (5'8.75") while
Kallie Calvaruso took bronze with a leap of 1.57 meters (5'1.75"). In a Lion vs. Lion contest in the women's pole vault,
Lara Zupanc's 3.65-meter (11'11.75") clearance bested teammate
Maryah Harrington's 3.20 meter (10'6") clearance for gold.
Kristian Jackson brought home gold in discus with a toss of 49.17 meters (161'4"). She added that up to a gold from the hammer throw contest as she unleased a toss of 53.38 meters (175'1") while Olsen took a silver from that event, releasing a toss of 50.87 meters (166'11").
The Lions face their final tune-up for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships next Saturday in Baton Rouge at the LSU Alumni Gold meet at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
