SLU Welcomes Teams from Louisiana & Mississippi for Relays

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team will look to make big strides on its home field on Saturday as the Lions host the Strawberry Relays at the Southeastern Track Complex.

The Lions are coming off a successful time at the Pelican Relays at Southern University in Baton Rouge last weekend where a school record fell and the Southeastern took home 11 gold medals from the event. They look to use homefield advantage to have an even better showing with the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships just three weeks away.

Several SLU athletes will look to improve on conference leading numbers and even better their spots to qualify for the NCAA Regional Meet. Terrell Webb will look to better his personal best of 64.09 meters in the hammer throw while Kristian Jackson looks to improve on her 53.78 meter throw in that same event and 15.42 meters in shot put. In the men's shot put, Thomas Nedow looks to better his mark of 17.07 meters.

Slavko Stevic and Katrine Olsen, both of whom broke the SLU indoor high jump record this year, look to do the same with the school outdoor marks when they compete in the high jump, one of several events both are scheduled to compete in on Saturday. Olu Ogunyemi, who holds the school indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles, will run in the 400-meter hurdles with Agerian Jackson. On the women's side, Esther Nwanze and Indya Jackson look to improve their standing in the hurdles competition. The relay teams will also compete, looking to improve their times while Darian Chestnut is set to make Southeastern's debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on the men's side.

"We're excited about our annual home meet," said SLU head track & field coach Michael Rheams. "This is a very quality meet and we expect to see some good marks put up."

The Strawberry Relays start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Southeastern Track Complex.
