HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team completed its first Southland Conference series sweep of the season with a 10-2 run-rule victory over Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.
SLU (30-8, 7-2 SLC) batted around in both the second and fourth inning on the way to its fifth consecutive victory. The visiting Lions fell to 5-27 overall and 1-8 in league action.
Bailey Krolczyk and
Maddie Watson each homered for SLU.
Maddie Leal and
Maria Detillier each had two hits, while Krolczyk and Leal led the way with two RBI. Watson, Detillier and
Audrey Greely all scored two runs apiece to fuel an 11-hit attack for Southeastern.
Southeastern ace
KK Ladner (9-1) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions. The Kiln, Mississippi native scattered five hits and struck out nine on the way to the complete-game win.
The Lady Lions broke open the game in the bottom of the second inning. Watson started the scoring with a solo home run – her third of the season – over the left field fence with one out.
Colleen Kulivan plated another run on a sacrifice fly and Leal stole home to give SLU a 3-0 lead. An RBI triple by Detillier and an RBI double by
Madison Rayner put Southeastern on top, 5-0.
A two-run home run by Diamond Sefe put the visitors on the board in the top of the fourth, but Southeastern answered right back in the bottom of the frame. Krolczyk powered her sixth home run of the season over the right centerfield fence to extend the lead back to five, then Leal doubled home a pair of runs to stretch the advantage back to 9-2.
SLU walked it off in the bottom of the sixth inning. Watson reached on an error and gave way to pinch runner
McKayla Ferguson, who promptly moved to second on a wild pitch. Greely then hit a sharp single through the right side to score the speedy Ferguson and enforce the mercy rule win.
Southeastern will play its next nine games away from home, starting with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Jackson State Tuesday.
