HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 7-1 victory over Southern Miss Wednesday night at the USM Softball Complex.
SLU (19-2) endured a two-hour plus weather delay before Wednesday's win. Southern Miss fell to 15-5 overall this season with the loss.
Cam Goodman led an 11-hit Southeastern attack, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Ka'Lyn Watson and
Maria Detillier added two hits apiece, while
Madison Rayner and
Blaire Bizette each drove in runs in the victory.
Cera Blanchard (9-0) remained unbeaten in the circle for Southeastern, limiting the Golden Eagles to three hits and striking out five in five strong innings of work.
KK Ladner, who along with Rayner was making a return to where their collegiate careers started, closed out the victory with two shutout innings of relief.
After USM took the early lead in the bottom of the first, SLU took the lead for good in its half of the third.
Ka'Lyn Watson singled home
Maddie Leal to tie the score, then scored the go-ahead run one batter later on an infield single by Detillier. An RBI groundout by Rayner plated Goodman and gave SLU a 3-1 cushion.
Southeastern would add to its lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Ka'Lyn Watson ripped a triple into the right field corner, then scored on a sharp single down the left field line by Goodman. Goodman later came home on one of USM's four errors in the game to extend the Lady Lion lead to 5-1.
An RBI single in the sixth by Bizette scored
McKayla Ferguson, then another error allowed Goodman to score the final run in the top of the seventh. Ladner allowed a one-out bunt single in the bottom of the seventh, but retired the next two batters to close out the victory.
Southeastern will continue its 21-game road swing Thursday, when it opens play at the Bulldog Invitational, facing host Mississippi State at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
