Lions Also Had Competitors at Southern Miss Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas and HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team got its first medal of the 95th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays thanks to Slavko Stevic's performance in the high jump on a busy day for the Lions at the Mike A Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas while two medals were secured by competitors who headed east to the Southern Miss Invitational at the Marshall Bell Complex.

Southeastern's first notable performance of the day came in the men's 110-meter hurdle timed final as Olu Ogunyemi set a new personal best in the event by finishing in 14.40 seconds. His time was good for 34th overall with Cole Palmer finishing right behind him in 35th in a time of 14.46 seconds.

Up next was the men's 4x400-meter relay main race, and the SLU team of Jaimie Omalla, Agerian Jackson, Omri Shiff, and Eugene Omalla finished third in their heat with a time of 3:07.38. That time came up just less than a half-second shy of qualifying for Saturday's final, coming in with the 11th fastest time on the day.

But the big mark for the Lions on the day came in the men's high jump competition as Stevic easily cruised over the bar at 2.00m, 2.05m, 2.10m, and 2.14m on his first attempt, immediately giving him a new highest jump for the 2023 outdoor season, besting the mark he set at LSU at 2.13m. He bettered it further as he cleared 2.17m (7'1.5") on his second attempt, giving him a chance to tie the school record of 2.20m (7'2.5"). However, the bar would come down on all three attempts at that height, locking him in at 2.17m for the day and earning him the silver medal while tying him for the highest successful jump in the competition.

In other action, Katrine Olsen tried to set a new personal best in the high jump straight away at 1.70m (5'7") but the bar came down on all three of her attempts. In the men's 100-meter dash timed final, Cohen Gallant crossed the line in 10.74 seconds, placing him 91st.

The Lions wrap up their week at the 95th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday as Kristian Jackson competes in the women's discus competition, which is set for 10:00 a.m. at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Meanwhile, several SLU competitors headed to Hattiesburg for the two-day Southern Miss Invitational, with Southeastern athletes competing in the hammer throw and javelin on day one. In the women's javelin, Bailey Babin took home bronze with a throw of 30.70m (100'8"). In the men's hammer throw, it was light work for Terrell Webb, who took home the gold with a throw of 59.44m (195') while Seth Pagart finished 11th with a throw of 42.12m (138'2").

On Saturday, day two of the Southern Miss Invitational, Southeastern will field competitors in the women's 200m and 400m dashes, men's discus, men's long jump, and men's shot put at the Marshall Bell Complex.
