Esther Nwanze Sets New Personal Best, Wins Heat in 400m Hurdles

AUSTIN, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team got underway in the 95th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Thursday with the hurdlers in action.

SLU's first competitors took part in the timed final of the women's 400-meter hurdles, with Indya Jackson and Esther Nwanze. Jackson went first, taking part in the first heat and in her first appearance in the discipline, crossed the line in 1:11.50.

But the day belonged to Nwanze as she crossed the line first in heat number two, setting a new personal best by stopping the clock in 1:03.16. That time would end up being 32nd best in the timed final.

On the men's side, Omri Shiff took part in the main 400-meter hurdle race, where the nation's top competitors were invited to compete. Shiff showed he belonged among the nation's best men's hurdlers, crossing the line second in heat two in 51.04, just 0.23 slower than his personal best which he set last week at LSU's Battle of the Bayou while beating competitors from the likes of Washington State, Alabama, Kentucky, and a conference competitor from Houston Christian in his heat. However, his hopes for advancing to Friday's final were dashed as he finished 12th overall on time, missing the mark to qualify on time by 0.35.

Southeastern continues at the 95th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday.
