Head Coach Jeremy White talks to Ysabella Lockwood (L) & Mabry Ward (R) during match vs. UTEP on March 15th
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University Beach Volleyball team welcomes in eight other teams as part of the inaugural Southeastern Sugar Beach Bash this weekend, including three Southland Conference foes, at Sugar Beach at the Youngsville Sports Complex.
The Lady Lions (4-10, 1-3 SLC), looking to get back in the win column after dropping two straight, will play four matches over the weekend in Youngsville, including the final two in-conference matches of the year. It starts at 11:00 a.m. with one of those two remaining Southland matches, taking on Nicholls State before wrapping up day one at 5:00 p.m. against North Alabama.
The Colonels (2-11, 0-5 SLC) are looking to end a six-match losing streak, having dropped all five of the matches they played during the Southland Showcase last weekend. The match against SLU represents the final in-conference match of the season for Nicholls as they look to avoid entering the conference tournament winless in conference play this season and at the bottom of the bracket once postseason play begins.
SLU will try to split this season's two meeting against North Alabama as the Lions (9-6) from Florence, Ala. knocked off the Lady Lions 3-2 back on March 4
th at the LSU Tiger Beach Challenge. After dropping three of their five matches that weekend in Baton Rouge, including the final two, UNA has gone on a six-match win streak with all six wins coming on their home court.
On Saturday, Southeastern closes out the event with two more matches, including their final match for conference tournament considerations. That match is the one that opens the day for Southeastern at 1:00 p.m. as the Lady Lions take on New Orleans before closing out their inaugural event with a match against Louisiana-Monroe.
The Privateers (7-5, 2-2 SLC) enter this weekend's action coming off of a .500 weekend at the Southland Showcase and look to get above the even mark as they will have one conference match remaining after this weekend's action. They are also looking to get back on the positive side of the results column this weekend as their last match ended in a 3-2 loss to Houston Christian at the HCU-hosted Southland Showcase.
ULM (12-0) comes to the event undefeated on the year, having swept all of their matches at events hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville, Nicholls, and Mary Hardin-Baylor. Last weekend at UMHB, the Warhawks knocked off East Texas Baptist, Southwest Baptist, the host Crusaders, and Hendrix.
Other teams competing in this inaugural event include the aforementioned Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville, the HCU Huskies, the Texas-El Paso Miners, and the Spring Hill Badgers. Friday's action kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with Texas A&M-Kingsville taking on Spring Hill and UTEP facing off with UNO. Saturday's first matches of the day also kick off at 9:00 a.m. and will see UTEP take on Spring Hill and TAMUK face UNO. All matches at the Southeastern Sugar Beach Bash will be played at Sugar Beach at the Youngsville Recreation Complex.
