HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team opens its 2023 season, while the basketball, track and tennis teams will also be in action during this week in Southeastern Athletics.
 
The Lady Lion softball team, which was picked second in the preseason Southland Conference poll and returns five All-SLC performers from a 2022 squad that set a new single-season record for wins (40), will host the Lion Classic at North Oak Park to open the season. SLU will face Missouri State Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. MSU and Nicholls will meet Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
Fans can get postgame autographs from their favorite Lady Lions following Friday's season opener. Every home Saturday during the 2023 campaign will feature Bingo at the Ballpark with fans having an opportunity to win prizes from Southeastern Athletics.
 
The SLU men's basketball team (14-10, 8-3 SLC) enters the week in a three-way tie atop the Southland standings, while the Southeastern women's basketball team (13-8, 8-3 SLC) is a game out of the league lead. Thursday will see the Lions and Lady Lions head to McNeese for a SLC doubleheader. The women's game opens the evening's action at 5 p.m. and the men's contest follows at 7 p.m.
 
The hoops squads return home Saturday to host Nicholls with the women's game set for 1 p.m. and the men's matchup tipping off at 3:30 p.m. Fans can get postgame autographs from their favorite Lions and Lady Lions at Saturday's twin bill. Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game is Cierria Cunningham and the first 150 fans at the women's basketball contest versus the Colonels will receive a trading card featuring the Tuscaloosa, Alabama native courtesy of PRIDE.
 
The Southeastern men's and women's track and field teams will continue their indoor season this week. The Lions and Lady Lions travel to Houston to compete in the Howie Ryan Invitational Friday.
 
The SLU tennis team (0-1) opens the road portion of its spring schedule this weekend. Southeastern heads to McComb, Mississippi to face Wyoming in a neutral site match Saturday at noon. The next day, the Lions head to UL Lafayette for a 1 p.m. match.

The latest episode of Inside Southeastern Basketball with David Kiefer will air Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM. Airing weekly on Tuesdays through Feb. 21 from Rainbow Daiquiris (14384 W. Thomas St.), the hour-long show will be hosted by Kiefer and Mark Willoughby and cover all things Lion Basketball.
