BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track & field team saw two more school records get bested on the final day of the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Cole Palmer got the record day started early as he ran the 60m hurdles of the heptathlon in a time of 8.13 seconds, one of two people to break the old Conference Championship Meet record at the same time.
But a record Palmer matched on the first day of competition on Sunday fell on Monday. In the final of the men's 60m hurdles,
Olu Ogunyemi took the first school record of the day as he ran an 8.04, besting the 8.08 set by Damian Manning back in the 2008 Conference Championships and tied by Palmer in Sunday's preliminaries. That record time earned Ogunyemi a silver medal and eight points for the Lions in the team standings.
The first conference champion from SLU to be crowned on the day went to
Eugene Omalla as he ran the 400m final in a time of 46.79 seconds, good enough to bring home the gold medal and ten points to the Lions.
Omri Shiff earned SLU three points for his sixth-place finish in 48.51 seconds.
Noah Kiprotich was making the right run at the right time in the 800m run to take advantage of an issue which led to teammate
Javon-Taye Williams falling and another runner being disqualified. The incident allowed Kiprotich to take over the front spot and cross the line first in a time of 1:53.47 to win the gold and ten points.
In the field events,
Kristian Jackson got things going in the shot put with her personal best in the indoor version of the event as she made a throw of 15.08m (49'5.75"), which held the top spot to the final throw of the competition before it was bested, earning Jackson the silver medal and the Lions eight points.
Thomas Nedow earned Southeastern five points on the men's side in the shot put with a fourth-place finish following a throw of 16.72m (54'10.25").
Much like a day earlier, a school record fell in the high jump competition, but this time it was on the women's side.
Katrine Olsen, who just a week ago at LSU tied the 18-year-old school record of 1.75m (5'9.75") originally set by Janice Ezegbunum at the Conference Championships, bested that mark by clearing 1.77m (5'9.75") to tie highest jump of the competition. She would be awarded the silver medal and eight points for her team for her efforts.
The final event of the competition resulted in the final gold medal for the Lions as Shiff, Eugene and
Jaimie Omalla, and
Agerian Jackson teamed up to break the tape in the men's 4x400m relay in 3:12.06, winning the last medal awarded at the Conference Championships by just more than two seconds.
Southeastern's men finished fourth in the team standings with 81 points while the women finished eighth with 32 points. SLU now awaits confirmation on if
Slavko Stevic qualified for the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships in the men's high jump following his record performance on Sunday. The NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships will be held March 10
th-11
th in Albuquerque, N.M. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The Southeastern outdoor track & field season kicks off a week later, on March 17
th-18
th, at the Louisiana Classics hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette at the Home Bank Track & Soccer Complex in Lafayette.
