HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball and track and field teams will look to win Southland Conference championships, the golf team opens its spring season, the men's basketball team closes the regular season, while the baseball, softball, tennis and beach volleyball teams will be in action during this week in Southeastern Athletics.
The Southeastern women's basketball team (18-9, 13-4 SLC) enters the week on the cusp of program history. With a win in Wednesday's 5 p.m. contest at HCU or a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi loss, SLU will win the first Southland Conference championship in school history and earn the top seed in next week's SLC Tournament. The Lady Lions head into the regular season finale having secured a top two seed in the league tourney and a bye into the semifinals.
The SLU track and field teams will compete in the second and final day of the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
The defending Southland champion Lion golf team will open the spring portion of its 2022-23 schedule this week. First-year head coach Lawrence Allan will lead Southeastern into the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Diamondhead, Mississippi.
The Southeastern men's basketball team (17-10, 11-6 SLC) has a first-round bye in next week's SLC Tournament in Lake Charles clinched heading into the regular season finale. SLU will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament with a win Wednesday at 7 p.m. at HCU or a Nicholls loss.
The Lion baseball team (7-1) opens the week at home, hosting St. John's in a rare Monday contest at 6 p.m. at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Southeastern will then open a seven-game road swing with a three-game series at Jacksonville. The series opens Friday at 5 p.m., continues Saturday at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday at noon.
The SLU softball team (12-2) will join its baseball counterparts in the Sunshine State. The Lady Lions will open the week with a 4 p.m. contest at Florida A&M Wednesday, before heading to Madeira Beach, Florida to compete in The Spring Games. SLU's tournament slate includes games versus UAlbany (Friday, 11:30 a.m.), Georgetown (Friday, 2 p.m.), Central Michigan (Saturday, 9 a.m.), Yale (Saturday, 11:30 a.m.) and LIU (Sunday, 10:30 a.m.).
The Southeastern tennis team (3-3) will look to extend its three-match win streak this week. The Lions will head down to New Orleans Sunday to take on Houston in a 9 a.m. match on the Dillard campus.
The SLU beach volleyball team (2-1) will head to Baton Rouge to compete in the Tiger Beach Challenge hosted by LSU this weekend. The Beach Lions will open the tournament facing Central Arkansas at 11 a.m. and North Alabama at 6 p.m. Saturday. Sunday will see Southeastern take on South Carolina at 1 p.m. and LSU at 3 p.m.
